Stanley Newman

Stanley Newman is an expert when it comes to crossword puzzles. He creates, edits, and publishes crossword puzzles and is currently the editor of Newsday Sunday Crossword and the Newsday Daily Crossword. He also runs and maintains a website known as Stan Newman's Crossword Land where much of his work and efforts are shared with the public.

Newman, a resident of Massapequa Park was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He finished a mathematics course in Brooklyn College after which, earned a masters degree in statistics from the Rutgers University.

His Profession

Before getting involved with crossword puzzles, Newman's first professions and careers were teaching and being employed in Wall Street as a bond analyst and a consumer market researcher. But because of the global financial crisis in 1987 also known as Black Friday, Wall Street had to cut the number of its employees and Newman was eventually one of the many who were forced to involuntarily retire.

His Career on Crosswords

Since childhood, the young Stanley has always been fond of crossword puzzles. One instance that has proven his exceptional skills with it was when he won three tournaments in the U.S. Open Crossword Championship in 1982. In 1983, he started his publishing career by producing his own newsletter, later, his puzzle books. During these years, Newman was also earning extra by regularly contributing to the regular puzzles of magazines.

After his stint in Wall Street, Newman decided to make his passion for puzzle a fulltime career. He became the editor of Newsday Sunday Crossword in March, 1988 and in January, 1992, the editor of Newsday Daily Crossword. Aside from these two Newspapers, he is also a contributor for some magazines like the Business Week, People, Sport, and Prevention.

From the years 1993 to 2000, he was the publishing director of the Puzzles and Games division of the Random House. He has authored and co-authored a total of 200 books including the popular trivia encyclopedia 15,003 Answers. Much of his works can now be accessed online at Crossword Land.

Fame and Citations

Stanley Newman set a new world record in 1996 as the fastest man who can do and complete a New York Times crossword puzzle. His incredible thinking time was at 2 minutes and 14 seconds. Newman has also appeared in the game show The Challenges where he eventually won $112,000 in total. He has organized several puzzle tournaments and he also hosts the popular Crossword University cruise.
